公元742年，即唐玄宗天宝元年，日本僧人荣叡与普照等人听闻鉴真和尚的威名后，专程前往扬州大明寺拜谒鉴真和尚，并极力邀请他前往日本传法。鉴真和尚为了东渡弘扬佛法，历经五次失败，其间遭遇了弟子圆寂、官府阻挠等困难，甚至双目失明，但他始终矢志不渝。最终，他将当时繁荣的中国佛法以及医药、艺术、建筑、文学等，通过水路传播到了日本。 鉴真和尚不仅传入了戒律，促成了日本律宗一派的形成，还间接推动了日本佛教史上两位宗师——真言宗的空海上人与天台宗的最澄上人的崛起，进而开启了平安、镰仓时期日本佛教的鼎盛局面。在文化方面，随鉴真大师东渡传入的建筑、雕刻、书法、绘画、医药乃至民生日用等内容，为大唐文化在日本留下了极为珍贵的丰富遗产。鉴真和尚也因此被誉为日本“天平文化的巨人”。
